Health education programs are designed to empower Derby residence to improve their health and quality of life. Programs are managed by the Derby Health Collaborative.

Derby Walks LogoACTIVE LIVING

Derby Walks Initiative 

Join the Derby Walks Initiative by pledging to walk 30 minutes most days to improve and maintain your health. Walking is great for your health and only requires a good pair of shoes. Walking reduces the risk of many chronic diseases too. By signing up and tracking your time, you will become eligible to use the indoor track at the DRC free of charge on inclement weather days. StoryWalk 

Imagine you arStoryWalk Logoe taking a walk through High Park and you come upon a page from a children’s picture book. As you walk along the path, you discover another page, and then another and you realize you’re reading a story! StoryWalk combines the pleasures of reading wonderful children’s books aloud with all the joys and benefits of walking together outdoors. Conceived as a way to inspire parents, teachers, and other adults to take young children outdoors to enjoy reading stories together, StoryWalk helps build children’s interest in reading while encouraging healthy outdoor activity for both children and their families. Join the fun at Derby’s High Park!

DiaBEATThisSmallDiabetes Self-Management Program 

If you are living with diabetes or a caregiver of someone who does, this workshop is for you! Diabetes self-management workshops are interactive learning opportunities that teach techniques to manage common symptoms. Workshops are free and led by trained leaders.

Each participant in the workshop receives a copy of the companion book, Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Condition, and an audio relaxation tape. Classes are highly participative, where mutual support and success build the participants’ confidence in their ability to manage their health and maintain active and fulfilling lives.             

Day: Wednesdays    Session dates: July 11 – August 15

Time:  7 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.   Fee:  FREE but you must pre-register

Eat Healthy, Be Active Workshop Series 

People are frequently too busy, on a limited budget, or simply do not know how to make wise choices about food. This four-week workshop series can help you make choices that promote good health, maintain a healthy weight, and prevent disease.. These workshops teach individuals how small changes in diet (reducing sugar, salt, fats, and calories) combined with adequate physical activity add up to better health.

Day:   Mondays

Dates: July 16 – August 6

Time:  5:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.

Fee:     $20 for entire series

Location:  DRC, Greteman Room

BabyTalk logoBaby Talk is a free prenatal education series taught by medical professionals that gives women and their family a chance to learn and get ready for the new baby. You will get informative materials and baby items simply by coming to class each week. The Baby Talk series offers an introductory class and sign up plus 6 free classes. Baby Talk gives you a place to go where you can get your questions answered in a safe and fun community. Go to http://www.babytalkict.com for a schedule of classes.

Active living 

Let’s Move Derby 

The Derby Health Collaborative is challenging every resident in Derby and the USD 260 community to a month-long walking program. Walking is a low-impact exercise that packs surprisingly powerful health benefits and Let’s Move Derby Community inspires people to make walking a part of their healthy lifestyles.Anyone can participate by setting a goal to walk five days each week during the month of September. To be eligible for prizes download a challenge tracking card at the DRC website. Complete the card and turn your tracking card in to the DRC by October 15. Starting healthy habits while in school is the key to staying healthy for a lifetime. During the month of September, staff and students in USD 260 record the number of minutes they are active each day. These minutes convert to individual and school miles.  First, second and third place banners will be awarded during this friendly competition to the most active school. Check with your school’s PE teacher or go to the DRC website to download your tracking card.

SIDS is the sudden, unexplained death of a baby younger than 1 year of age that doesn’t have a known cause even after a complete investigation. Each year in the United States, thousands of babies die suddenly and unexpectedly. These deaths are called SUID (pronounced SOO-idd), which stands for “Sudden Unexpected Infant Death.” The Derby Health Collaborative will host a seminar to inform parents, grandparents and friends about the newest research and the best practices to keep your infants safe and healthy. New moms (within 1 year) and expectant moms will received a portable baby crib upon completion of the requirements.

Expanded Food and Nutrition Program (EFNEP)

EFNEP offers 5 weeks of interactive, practical lessons in basic nutrition, food preparation, food budget management, and food safety in settings convenient for you. The Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program is sponsored by the USDA and taught by K-State Research & Extension.

  • Participants will learn how to:
  • Buy healthy food on a budget. 
  • Plan nutritious and quick meals.
  • Prepare and taste recipes your family will love. 
  • We serve parents with young children and pregnant women that are eligible for:

Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), WIC, Head Start, Families whose children receive free and reduced lunch

Get Real, Get Healthy - Becoming Your Ideal Me 

Find out how to reshape your body, restore your energy and reboot your life by healing the root cause of overeating. Join Patty Stuever for this unique 4 week program on how to release that extra weight by learning to eliminate sugar and become your Ideal Me. It is recommended to purchase the following book to enhance your class experience; 8 to Your Ideal Weight by MK Mueller.

November 27, 6:30 p.m. – Skippy Cavanaugh: One Man’s Journey to A Healthier Lifestyle

Derby’s own Skippy Cavanaugh has lost 150+ pounds in an attempt to live life to its fullest, all while working at Dairy Queen. Skippy will share his motivation and journey to improve his health and become an inspiration to others that struggle.
