Health education programs are designed to empower Derby residence to improve their health and quality of life. Programs are managed by the Derby Health Collaborative.

Derby Walks LogoACTIVE LIVING

Derby Walks Initiative

Join the Derby Walks Initiative by pledging to walk 30 minutes most days to improve and maintain your health. Walking is great for your health and only requires a good pair of shoes. Walking reduces the risk of many chronic diseases too. By signing up and tracking your time, you will become eligible to use the indoor track at the DRC free of charge on inclement weather days. Derby Walks Jamboree

The last Wednesday of each month the Derby Walks initiative will host a social event on the DRC track. Health and wellness tips will be available, blood pressure can be taken, and guidance will be given on how to make your walk more enjoyable. If you’d like to find a walking partner that can be arranged too. Come walk and enjoy a little social time with other walkers.

StoryWalk

Imagine you arStoryWalk Logoe taking a walk through High Park and you come upon a page from a children’s picture book. As you walk along the path, you discover another page, and then another and you realize you’re reading a story! StoryWalk combines the pleasures of reading wonderful children’s books aloud with all the joys and benefits of walking together outdoors. Conceived as a way to inspire parents, teachers, and other adults to take young children outdoors to enjoy reading stories together, StoryWalk helps build children’s interest in reading while encouraging healthy outdoor activity for both children and their families. Join the fun at Derby’s High Park!

Diabetes Academy

Diabetes Academy is a free one hour class given by a Novo Nordisk Diabetes Educator to help you learn about managing diabetes. You will learn basic information and terminology, tips for eating healthy and staying active, and the basics about diabetes medications.

Day: Monday

Session dates: January 8

Time: 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

Fee: FREE no registration is required.

Location: Derby Recreation Center, Greteman Room

If you are living with diabetes or a caregiver of someone who does, this workshop is for you! Diabetes self-management workshops are interactive learning opportunities that teach techniques to manage common symptoms. Workshops are free and led by trained leaders.

Each participant in the workshop receives a copy of the companion book, Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Condition, and an audio relaxation tape. Classes are highly participative, where mutual support and success build the participants’ confidence in their ability to manage their health and maintain active and fulfilling lives.

LIVING WELL WITH "IT"

Chronic Disease Self-Management Program (CDSMP)

If you are living with depression, diabetes, cancer, arthritis, high blood pressure, heart disease, etc., then this 6-week program is for you. This CDSMP workshop is interactive and helps you learn techniques to manage your chronic condition. Workshops are free and led by trained leaders. February 15, 6:30 p.m. – Remedies in the Prevention of Diabetes

Join Sharon Penner Health Educator with Novo Nordisk to learn how to prevent diabetes from affecting you or your family members. The diabetes risk questionnaire will be available for you to take to see if you are at risk.

March 15, 6:30 p.m. Gardening, Good for Your Health

Many gardeners view their hobby as the perfect antidote to the modern world, a way of reclaiming some of the intangible things they’ve lost in their busy, dirt-free lives. Join Derby’s own Jack Hezlep, Master Gardener to learn about how you too can create fresh, healthy produce, ease stress in your life, keep healthy and limber, and even improve your mood.

Cooking Matters @ the Store

Want to save money at the store? Want to buy healthy foods for your family? Need some tasty and healthy recipes? If you said yes, come join us for a free guided grocery store tour where you’ll learn skills for buying healthy foods on a budget. During the hour tour, you’ll practice skills like buying fruits and vegetables on a budget, comparing unit prices to find bargains, reading and comparing food labels, identifying whole grains and sticking to your budget! After the tour you will receive a free book full of tasty recipes and simple tips on buying healthy, low-cost foods and a free reusable grocery bag. Register now, space is limited in each class.

Dining With Diabetes

BabyTalk logoBaby Talk is a free prenatal education series taught by medical professionals that gives women and their family a chance to learn and get ready for the new baby. You will get informative materials and baby items simply by coming to class each week. The Baby Talk series offers an introductory class and sign up plus 6 free classes. Baby Talk gives you a place to go where you can get your questions answered in a safe and fun community.

Safe Sleep Seminar

SIDS is the sudden, unexplained death of a baby younger than 1 year of age that doesn’t have a knbabiesown cause even after a complete investigation. Each year in the United States, thousands of babies die suddenly and unexpectedly. These deaths are called SUID (pronounced SOO-idd), which stands for “Sudden Unexpected Infant Death.” The Derby Health Collaborative will host a seminar to inform parents, grandparents and friends about the newest research and the best practices to keep your infants safe and healthy. New moms (within 1 year) and expectant moms will received a portable baby crib upon completion of the requirements.
